DYLAN KAIN // INTERVIEW WITH BONNIE DAVIS
Bonnie Davis is the Creative Director of Dylan Kain | Love St. Studio. She has a penchant for washed out black tees
& makes a deadly mulled wine mix. Music DJ turned fashion designer, this
sassy mama is due to launch her own premier accessories line under the Dylan Kain label in October 2012. We
caught up recently to discuss fashion muses, mix tapes & living by the
ocean.
What is your current state of mind?
Frenetic. Scattered. Trying to
think of a million things at once. Overall, very happy & thankful.
So, where would we find you on a Saturday
morning?
Most likely at the local market,
coffee in hand, trying to control my wandering toddler.
Did you always aspire to become a designer?
I actually dreamed of becoming a
DJ...which I did do for the first few years after leaving school. I loved it. I
thought I would travel Europe as a DJ & study art in Spain. Such romantic
notions! But I fell in love with an Australian boy & wouldn't change my
life for the world.
How would you describe your style?
It used to be Gold Coast trash uggs
but now more 90's rock chic meets modern classic...I hope!?
Do you have any collaborations in mind?
I would love to collab with Lou
Doillon. Her music, style & unorthodox beauty is amazing.
Who do you consider great icons of style? Any fashion muses?
Lou Doillon, for her sexy french
rocker luxe
Elin King, for the way she
reinvents classics
Mira Duma...everything she wears is
epic
Which resources online, print or otherwise do you
reference often?
Print // Russh Magazine
Online // Style.com, NOWMANIFEST, We The People,
ThemThangs
Are you coveting any items we should know about?
Anything Givenchy! I'm also in love
with Tom Ford's fragrance line...wouldn't mind a few of those puppies!
How are your records organised?
I spent so much money on records
when I was djing & took such bad care of them. Most of the covers are
ripped & the records are in the wrong sleeves - so "organised"
does not apply here...
Top 5 album covers / record sleeves?
Defected label cover art is
amazing. You can't go past Led Zep's 'Houses of the Holy' or anything by Roger
Dean. He was one tripped out cat!
You're putting together a Winter mix-tape...what
do you select as Tracks 1, 2 & 3?
Hmm. Something to drink mulled wine
to...
Track 1 # The Dandy Warhols -
Godless (I am really into 90's music at the moment)
Track 2 # The Zombies - Time of the
season
Track 3 # The Doors - Love her
madly
Can you recall where your last favourite meal was?
I can tell you when my last bad
meal was - last night & my cooking! I've created some shockers lately. The
last great meal I had was a pineapple condensed milk pancake from a tiny Warung
in Indo. Yum.
You live on the coast...can you describe your
hood & why you live there?
Our neighbourhood is really pretty
- lots of trees around. The people are mostly quiet but there are pockets of
super talented, creative individuals with their own projects going on. The
people & the environment really inspire me & push me to be more
creative. I am a really lucky lady.

RUBBER | A FILM BY QUENTIN DUPIEUX
Directed by Frenchman Quentin Dupieux, Rubber is a comedy / horror about a tire that comes to life with homicidal psychic powers. For no reason.
In terms of French-electro movie scores, the collaboration between Dupieux (under his musical pseudonym Mr Oizo) & Gaspard Augé (Justice) is a total winner.
Vinyl purchase - I think so!
